Guthra Lewis

Guthra Lewis, a former resident of Rosepine, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the Tomball Nursing Center in Tomball, Texas. Lewis, age 85, died of natural causes.

He resided in Magnolia, Texas for one year with his wife, Glory Lacy Lewis.

A funeral service will be held Thursday evening, May 20, at 7 p.m. at Magnolia Funeral Home in Magnolia, Texas and a graveside service will be held at noon on Friday, May 21, at Lewis New Cypress Cemetery near Rosepine on Henry Bass Road.

Dec. 2, 1918 -- May 18, 2004

Guthra Lewis of Magnolia, Texas, formerly of Longmont, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, in Tomball, Texas, after a long illness. He was 85.

He was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Rosepine, La.

Mr. Lewis married Glory Lewis on Dec. 24, 1948, in Lake Charles, La.

He lived in Longmont between the years 1968 and 1998. His wife was a teacher at Mountain View Elementary and he operated a fruit stand on the corner of U.S. Highway 287 and Colo. Highway 66 for many years. It was because of his fruit stand that he earned the name ``The Watermelon Man.''

While in Longmont, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were members of New Creation Church.

He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Sharon Thompson of Beaumont, Texas, Diane Bennett of Houston, Pam Jackson of Henderson, Nev., and Jodi Danna of Kennewick, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was held Friday, May 21, in Rosepine, La.
