Services for Guy McDaniel to be held today

Services for Guy A. McDaniel, a Dallas oilman and former president of the Dallas Petroleum Club, will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home.

Mr. McDaniel, 74, died of cancer Monday at Baylor University Medical Center.

A native of Comanche, Okla., he began his career in the oil field supply division of Jones and Laughlin Steel Co. in Oklahoma City. He was transferred to Dallas in 1951.

In 1966, he started The McDaniel Company, an oilfield supplier. He was elected to a one-year term as president of the Dallas Petroleum Club in 1968.

In the 1970s, Mr. McDaniel co-founded two oil exploration companies, Regal Petroleum Corp., and Maynard Oil Co., now one of the nation's 100 largest public oil companies.

He remained interested in oil and gas prospects even after his illness made it difficult to work, said his son, Gary McDaniel of Dallas.

``He was a very optimistic person. Even though people thought the oil and gas industry had seen better days, he still felt there were a lot of opportunities. He stayed with it as long as he could,'' he said.

Mr. McDaniel also refused to give up his favorite activities, his family said. An amateur horticulturist, he helped trim trees at St. Alcuin Montessori School in Dallas until two weeks ago. He also served on the board advisers of the school.

In addition to his son, Mr. McDaniel is survived by his wife, Norma McDaniel; and a daughter, Kathy McDaniel; both of Dallas.
