Guy Jones Jr.

Funeral services for Guy Jones Jr., 73, of Carrollton, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Williams & Lord Funeral Home.

Mr. Jones died of cancer Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

He was the owner and operator of Guy Jones Construction Co. in Greenwood for more than 30 years. A native of Carroll County, he was a graduate of J.Z. George High School, and attended Holmes Junior College in Goodman, where he was selected as an all-state player in football as both a center and a linebacker. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he received several medals, including medals for marksmanship.

Mr. Jones was a member of the Greenwood Exchange Club and American Legion Post No. 29, and served on the board of the Carroll County Council of Conservative Citizens. His family says that he was instrumental in rebuilding the Legion Hut and Veterans Monument in Greenwood.

He was a founder and charter member of the Carroll Education Foundation, which operates Carroll Academy, and served on the school's board for 12 years including four years as president. He was also one of the founders of the Big Sand Recreation Association, which owns the gymnasium that Carroll Academy leases, and was instrumental in building all of the facilities. He was a member of Carrollton Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Ruth Mims Jones; and a sister, Peggy Jean Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Corder Jones of Carrollton; four daughters, Sharon Stone and her husband, Bobby, Deborah Clark and her husband, David, Angela “Sissy” Lloyd and Gail Hooks and her husband, Kevin, all of Carrollton; a son, Terry Smith of Carrollton; one brother, Russell Jones of Carrollton; three sisters, Ann Walls of Greenwood, Ruth Reeves of Holly Springs and Becky Farris of Holcomb; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. George Smith and the Rev. Jeff Myers will officiate at the services.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton with military rites performed by American Legion Post No. 29.

Pallbearers will be Phil Wolfe, Wyatt Clark, Randy Lougee, Gerald Conway, Kenny Walls, Jamey Mims, Delbert Edwards and Bill Lord.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Boler, Dr. Jeff Moses, Louis Jones Jr., Harold Scruggs, J.W. Mims, Ronnie White, Marsh Pickett, Bobby Stone, Gordon Lackey, Lydia Chassaniol, Hub Jackson, members of the Carroll Academy school board and administration, members of American Legion Post No. 29, members of the Greenwood Exchange Club and the board of directors of the Carroll County Council of Conservative Citizens, G.L. Denley, James R. Mullen, Bruce Heath, Mitch Costilow, Harmon Stanford, James Stanford Jr., David Brown, Frank Bailey, James Campbell, Buck Downs, Tommy Long, Harry Herbert Sanders, Richard Crenshaw, Gary Bankston, Bobby Childers, Billy Nix Jr. and Stanley “Sugar” Mullin.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 this evening at the funeral home.
