Harris D. Butler, Jr

HOUSTON, TEXAS - Harris D. Butler, Jr., 63, of Houston, died Monday December 24, 1984. Mr. Butler was a native of Shreveport, La., and was a graduate of L.S.U. He received his M.A. from The University of Texas at Austin, and had been a member of The Shreveport Symphony, teaching clairnet [sic clarinet] as well, while in Shreveport. He was a lon[g]time teacher with Robert E. Lee Senior High School in Houston, and had been chairman of the Social Studies Department. He was a member of The Congress of Teachers and was an active member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, where he was a substitute teacher for the Friendship Class.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Pledger Butler of Houston; his mother, Bertha Dunn Butler of Houston and Shreveport; a son and daughter-in-law, Harris D. Butler III and Cynthia Butler of Houston; a son, Stephen P. Butler of Houston; an aunt, Pearl Alfieri of Baton Rouge, La.; and numerous cousins.

Friends may call at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, after 8 a.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday December 28 at Gethsemane United Methodist Church, 6856 Bellaire Blvd., with the Rev. Ferd D. Dawson III officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Texas.
