Harry Monroe White

Harry M. White, 92, of Battle Creek, died peacefully at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Care Residence on Tuesday, December 29, 2009.

He was born March 14, 1917 to Harry John and Almedia (Daniels) White, in Sicily Island, LA. Harry was raised in Natchez, MS and Lake Providence, LA. Upon his induction into the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Ft. Custer, where he met and married Frances W. McConnell on November 30, 1942. He served during WWII with the U.S. Army in Germany and the European Theater and was awarded a Bronze Star. After the war, he made Battle Creek his permanent home. Harry was employed as a machinist and foreman at Grand Trunk Western Railroad, retiring in 1983, after 30 years.

He was preceded in death by Frances, his wife of 59 years on November 13, 2001; his parents; three sisters, Eva Lee White, Zola Davis, and Josephine Taylor; and two brothers, Walter Owen White, and Jesse White. Surviving are his daughter, Pat (Mark) Haskins of Battle Creek; two granddaughters, Jenny Haskins of Battle Creek and Kristen (Richard) Hillis of Arlington, TN; and a special ``adopted'' son, Albert W. Carter of Alexandria, MN. Also surviving are a brother, Fred White of Houston, TX, a sister Myrtis Mosley of Lake Providence, LA, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of North Avenue Church of God, American Legion Oscar Brady Post #298 and the former V.F.W. Post 8715.

Harry lived his life to the fullest. He had a wide variety of interests, and always had some type of project in progress. He enjoyed gardening, and each year had a large garden next to his home, as well tending another large garden at the home of his daughter. He took great joy in growing different kinds of vegetables, and always planted enough for the wildlife to also enjoy. Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and making jewelry from rocks he had cut and polished himself. He was a good cook, and loved making old-fashioned southern dishes. He enjoyed oil and primitive painting, making wooden musical instruments, and weaving scarves and ties. Harry always had a good story to tell, mostly about unusual experiences he had during his long and eventful life. Most of all he loved being a grandpa and spending time with his granddaughters.

Those who knew Harry appreciated his kind and generous spirit. He often made personal sacrifices for the good of others. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

At the request of the family, friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where they will be received 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-7:30 p.m.
