Harve Cockerham
Mr. Harve Cockerham, 77, of Milford died Sunday, May 12. He was born in Buena Vista near Waxahachie September 23, 1924, son of the late Joseph Edward and Martha Elizabeth (Mattie) Cockerham. He moved to the Pluto community at the age of 13 and lived there until his death. He attended school at Buena Vista, Berry's Chapel (Pluto) and Milford and graduated from Milford High School in 1943.
He married Edna Leona Vest December 14, 1951. Harve farmed until 1956 and then went to work at a machine shop in Waxahachie for 12 years before purchasing Milford Cash Grocery in 1968. He operated the grocery store until his retirement in 1986. He played the guitar and sang on radio back in the 1940s when music was live, mainly on stations KAND in Corsicana and KCLE in Cleburne.
In latter years he entertained at local music shows in Venus, Maypearl and Woodbury, among others, and played at retirement and nursing homes around the area. He and his wife had hosted jam sessions once a week for the last eight years.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jason Todd Bradley and Larry Joe Cockerham; two brothers, Ernest Cockerham and Morgan Cockerham; three half-brothers, Henry Cockerham, Chester Cockerham and J.B. Box; and one sister, Opal Anthony.
Survivors include: his wife, Leona; two children, Debbie Bradley and husband, Ricky and Bruce Cockerham and wife, Susie, all of Milford; three grandchildren; two brothers, J.E. Cockerham of Milford and GD Cockerham of Arlington; two sisters, Odell Crumpton and Ioma Barnes of Milford; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 14, at 3 p.m. at Edens Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsboro with John Wheatley officiating. Interment was at Bethel Cemetery near Waxahachie.
