Hazel Cockerham
Hazel Cockerham, 95 of Red Oak, passed away Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at her residence. She was born to the late J. C. and Emily Alday Hitt on October 14, 1915 in Donaldsville, GA. and came to Texas on a train at age two. She has been a resident of Ellis County for 93 years
Hazel was very out going and was a born giver. She was extremely optimistic and loved helping others. She loved picnics, was an avid reader and loved word puzzles for her entire 95 years. Hazel traveled to every state in the union for fun and also as a Tupperware representative. She loved the Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers. She was one of the founders and a PTA Life Member of the PTA in the Red Oak ISD. Hazel was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church of Red Oak and was a counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship for over twenty years. She will be missed by so many. Hazel worked in her community and was a stanch supporter of the Red Oak School District.
She is survived by her daughters, Heneri Ann Short of Red Oak, Joy Shaw and her husband, J. V. ``Nick'' of Red Oak; her brothers, Rex Hitt and his wife, Barbara of Ovilla, Harry Hitt of Waxahachie; her daughter in law, Bobbie Cockerham of Burleson; her son in law, Philip Trees of Red Oak; she is also survived by 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 15 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Wallace Cockerham; her daughter, Billie Louise Trees; her son,Gordon Cockerham; her son in law, Burl Short; 3 grandsons, W. B. ``Dub'' Short, Billy Ray Trees, and Roger Trees.
Services to celebrate her life are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church of Red Oak with Rev. Mike Alexander, Rev. Allen Grant, and Rev. Lawanda Ann Hitt officiating. Interment will follow at the Red Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Red Oak ISD Project Success or Education Foundation.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 29, 2010 at Wayne Boze Funeral Home, Waxahachie.
