Helen Bates
SULPHUR -- Helen Bates, 77, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in a Lake Charles hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Wallace in DeSoto Parish, and she had lived in Sulphur for 55 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Sulphur, and she served as a Sunday school and church training teacher. She was a member of WMU, and she served on various committees before her illness. Helen shared 58 years of marriage with husband Marcus E. Bates.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Gregory M. Bates of Sulphur; two daughters, Linda K. Richard of Crowley and Melva ``Sissy'' Armer of Sulphur; two brothers, Robert F. Gregory of Westlake and Hugh Douglas Gregory of Lake Charles; three grandchildren, Traci Vinson of Fort Worth, Texas, Ross Armer of Sulphur and Angela Hanna of Indiana; and four great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in Robison Funeral Home. The Revs. David Holder and James Sample will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Carlyss. Visitation is noon-9 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. Saturday.
