Herbert R. Hawthorne
Services for Herbert R. Hawthorne will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004 in the First Baptist Church, Jena, La. The Rev. Dominick DiCarlo will officiate and burial will follow in the Jena Cemetery.
Mr. Hawthorne was born April 7, 1912 in Parhams, La., and passed away Friday, April 9, 2004 in the Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Alexandria. He was a veteran of WWII and was a POW in Germany. He was a retired merchant and a member of the First Baptist Church in Jena where he served as deacon since 1948.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Grover and Mary Catherine Fairbanks Hawthorne, and a brother, Ronald.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Lessie Hill Hawthorne of Jena; a son, Alvie ``Bubba'' Hawthorne of New Orleans; two daughters, Peggy and husband Joe Rachal of Shreveport and Donna and husband Vaughn Seale of Hammond; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anise Gunter of Natchez, Miss.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2004 in the Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home in Jena and Monday from 8 a.m. until shortly before service time.
The pallbearers will be his grandsons and great-grandson. Deacons of the First Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
