Herbert Thomas Gilliam

Mr. Herbert Thomas Gilliam, 91, retired self-employed carpenter, died Sunday, May 2, 2009 at his residence on the Santa Fe Pike.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with John Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late George Washington Gilliam and America Elizabeth Davidson Gilliam and attended Maury County schools, During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army, attached to the 34th Armored Division with duty in France, Germany, and England.

Mr. Gilliam was a long-time member of Graymere Church of Christ and formerly served as preacher for Hall's Chapel Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy May Wilsford Gilliam of Columbia; daughters, Joyce (Will) Cheek of Columbia, Janice White of Columbia, Jane (Keith) Elliott of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Judy (Michael, Jr.) Perko of Columbia; grandchildren, Tracy Harwell, Scott (Kristie) Cheek, Caswell (Susan) Huff, Gay (Tim) Skelley, Tonya (Bryan) Baker, Tarynn (Brian) Lovell, Jamie (Adam) Brown, and Paige Perko; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Hettie Hardison of Gallatin; and a brother, Boyd C. (Lois) Gilliam of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Gilliam Lee and brothers, Riley Gilliam, Floyd Gilliam, Arvis Gilliam, Howard Gilliam, Jessie Gilliam, and Hollis Gilliam.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
