Hollis E. Gilliam
Mr. Hollis E. Gilliam, 83, retired brickmason at Union Carbide and resident of the Nashville Highway, died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at Maury Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Elmer Lusk and Joe Macer officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 5 - 8p.m. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late George Washington Gilliam and America Elizabeth Davidson Gilliam. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After his training in Charleston, SC he was stationed in India where his B-29 unit flew from India over the "hump" (Himalayan Mountains) to battle the Japanese. Later he was stationed on the Isle of Tinian where he witnessed the Enola Gay carrying the atomic bomb on its way to Hiroshima. Mr. Gilliam was a member of Eastside Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Jean McMahan Gilliam of Columbia; one daughter, Mona Gilliam (Ben) Baggett of Nashville; three sons, Roger L. (Gail) Gilliam, David R. Gilliam both of Columbia and Richard E. (Candy) LeMay of Knoxville; two brothers, Herbert (Dot) Gilliam, Boyd C. (Lois) Gilliam both of Columbia; one sister, Hettie Hardison of Gallatin; grandchildren, Ben Terrell “Terry” Gilliam, John Austin Baggett, Patrick L. Gilliam, SFC David C. Dodson, U.S. Army stationed in Iraq; Katherine Marie Gilliam, Sarah Genevieve Gilliam, Richard LeMay, Jr., Amy LeMay Benjamin; and one great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Dodson.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Gilliam Lee and brothers, Riley Gilliam, Floyd Gilliam, Arvis Gilliam, Howard Gilliam and Jessie Gilliam.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Gilliam, Jason Gilliam, Terry Gilliam, John Baggett, Richie LeMay, Brandon McMahan, Keith McMahan, Arthur Wentzel and Bill Carroll. Honorary pallbearers will be SFC David Dodson, elders and deacons of Eastside Church of Christ, Union Carbide retirees, Dr. Moataz Toban, Dr. Rand Hayes and Special Hospice Caregiver, Brenda Vogel.
