Hopkins L. Pratt

Hopkins L. was born on 11 October 1832 in Bibb County, Alabama. Hopkins Pratt is named for his uncle, Hopkins Pratt, brother of John W. Pratt. His middle name may have been Lacy as one of his grandsons was named Lacy. In the 1840 Bibb County, Alabama census, Hopkins Pratt is believed to be one of two males age 5 to 10 in the household of John Pratt. (1840 Bibb Co., AL census, p. 123). In the Fall of 1841, Hopkins Pratt traveled with his family and others in a wagon train to Saline County, Arkansas.

In the 1850 Saline County, Arkansas census, Hopkins Pratt age 16 (or 18) is listed in the household of John Pratt. (1850 Saline Co., AR census, dwelling 236). On 10 December 1854, Hopkins Pratt married Minerva Lockheart in Saline County, Arkansas. Minerva Jane Lockhart, the daughter of Stacy and Nancy Lowe Lockhart, was born about 1836 in Alabama. On 1 August 1857, Hopkins L. Pratt received a land patent to 120 acres in Saline County, Arkansas, but the document was subsequently cancelled. (Fed. Land Pat. No. Doc. 7933). On 2 July 1860, Hopkins L. Pratt received a land patent to 40 acres in Saline County, Arkansas. (Fed. Land Pat. No. Doc. 11355). In the 1860 Saline County, Arkansas census, Hopkins L. Pratt age 27 is listed with Minerva J. age 24, Handy A. age 4 and Alva C. age 2 in his household in the Franklin Township. (1860 Saline Co., AR census, p. 589). On 1 April 1861, Hopkins L. Pratt received another patent for 80 acres in Saline County (now Grant), Arkansas. (Fed. Land Pat. No. Doc. 13794).

According to one record, on 19 July 1861, H. L. Pratt, private, and J. J. Pratt, corporeal, enlisted at Benton, Arkansas in the 11th Arkansas Infantry, Company F, CSA, known as the Saline Avengers. Rosters. According to another source, Hopkins S. Pratt, age 27, enlisted as a private and Joel B. Pratt, age 19, enlisted as a corporal in Company F of the 11th Arkansas Infantry, CSA. Both Hopkins and either J. J. or Joel Pratt were absent as sick at the capture of Island No. 10 on 8 April 1862. Glory, pp. 16, 70, 78. Hopkins L. Pratt was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall with blue eyes and dark hair.

On 22 November 1863, Hopkins L. Pratt age 31 enlisted as a private in the 4th Arkansas Cavalry, USA, Vance's Company at Benton, Arkansas and served as a nurse in the hospital (as he had done in the Confederate Army) from December 1863 through February 1864.
