Howard Purvis Butler

A longtime resident of Prairieville, he died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at his home at age 96. He was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Gloster, Miss. He was a retired carpenter with Local 1090 in Baton Rouge.

Visiting at Brown Funeral Home, Gloster, on Sunday, Feb. 17, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until service in the chapel at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Luther Rye.

Interment in Mary Springs Church Cemetery.

Survived by his wife, Mae Whittington Butler, of Prairieville; son, James Butler, of Prairieville; daughter, Carolyn Cernich and her husband Calvin, of Praireville; two grandchildren, Kevin and Stephen Cernich; and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Purvis Butler and Mattie Whittington Butler; nine brothers and sisters, Buelah Morris, Lena Bass, Willie Butler, Lucy Dixon, Vera Forman, Jake Butler, Ellis Butler, Etta Whittington and Nora Arnold.

He was a member of Mary Springs Church of God of Prophecy.
