Iona Slankard
(July 14, 1918 - August 13, 2010)

Iona Slankard 92 of El Dorado, died Friday, August 13, 2010 at the John R. Williamson Hospice House following a lengthy illness.

Born July 14, 1918 in Sikes, Louisiana she was the daughter of Allen Bernard and Bertha Jane Willis Erskine. Mrs. Slankard was a one time employee of Sample's Department Store. Before her return to El Dorado in 1973 she had been employed as secretary to the administrator of McClaren Hospital in Flint. Michigan. She was member of First Assembly of God Church in El Dorado.

During her leisure time her favorite activities were being with family, flower gardening, fishing and eating pizza.

Preceding her in death along with her parents were her husband, Henry O. Slankard, a son, John R. Whatley, three grandchildren, Robert D. Whatley, Jr., Jo Ann Marvel and Craig Marvel along with sisters, Inez Whatley and Patricia Erskine.

Survivors include a son, Robert D. Whatley (Diane) of Hubert, NC, two daughters, Martha Kellum (Don) of Smackover and Patricia Marvel (Bruce) of Russellville, two brothers, Allen Erskine (Betty) of Texarkana, AR, and James Erskine (Barbara) of Bentonville, AR, and four sisters, Margie Murphy of Auburn, IL, Bobbie Hesterly (Otho) of Little Rock, AR, Betty Clark (Bill) of Las Cruces, NM and Blondell Kearns of Ironton, MO. Also surviving are six grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A. M. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Byron White officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Memorial Park under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P. M. to 7:00 P. M. Monday evening at Bailey Funeral Home.
