Irene Mattie Robinson Owen

Irene Mattie Robinson Owen, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother died on February 22, 2007, at the age of 90. A service in her memory will be conducted at Bethel United Methodist Church in Downsville community at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2007, with burial at Mount Nebo, near Downsville, Louisiana. Officiating will be her loving nephew, Reverend Stephen Robinson. Pallbearers will be Andrew Owen, Wayne Hammons, Ronnie Hammons, Bruce Robinson, Tim Robinson, and Matthew Robinson. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. until service time at church.

She was born near Downsville, Louisiana on March 30, 1916. She married Lyman Andrew Owen on February 16, 1942. They lived many years in New Orleans, but made their final home at the Owen family farm near Downsville. She was an accomplished wildlife and landscape artist, talented seamstress, and a wonderful cook whose greatest pleasure was having family and friends gather at her table.

For many years she faithfully attended Bethel United Methodist Church where her parents and grandparents worshiped before her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Lyman Andrew Owen, and her parents, Margaret Ellen Spurlock and Enoch Alexander Robinson.

She is survived by her children, Melba Jean Owen and her husband, Robert George Canar of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Donald Wayne and his wife, Catherine Marie Skotak of Dallas Texas; five grandchildren: Robert Owen Canar and his wife, Jomjai Homwan of Pattaya Beach, Thailand, Cori Ann Canar of Charleston, South Carolina, Leslie Dawn Owen Long and her husband Mark Long, of Dallas Texas, Kelli Elizabeth Owen and Andrew James Owen of Dallas, Texas; one great-grandson, Nathan Blaise Long; a special sister and her husband, Shirley and Oliver Chapman; her niece, Pat Bearden, and a friend, Hattie Parker, who were always close to her and willing to help in any way; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her.
