I. C. Strickland

Funeral services for I. C. Strickland, prominent area educator, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church of Monroe. Mr. Strickland, 81, a resident of 105 Carolina Street, Monroe, died at St. Francis Medical Center Wednesday afternoon after a long illness.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. D. W. Poole, of Sulphur, the Rev. James M. Poole of Bogalusa and the Rev. Odell Simmons of Monroe. Burial will be at the Welcome Home Cemetery in Grayson under the direction of Kilpatrick's Funeral Home of Monroe.

A native of Harrisonburg, Mr. Strickland resided in Monroe for the past 28 years. A teacher and administrator in the public schools of Louisiana for 44 years, he served as principal of Beasley School, Kelly High School and for 21 years as principal at Mansfield. He spent four years subsequently at Northwestern State University as associate professor of economics and director of high school relations. He came to Monroe in 1949 as principal of Ouachita Parish High School, and served in that capacity until his retirement, May 31, 1961.

Well-known in education circles, he served as chairman of the Louisiana Committee of the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges, and as consultant of the Student Works Program of the National Youth Administration in Louisiana.

Active in civic and community affairs, he served as master of the Mansfield Masonic Lodge, president of the Mansfield and Natchitoches Rotary Clubs. Mr. Strickland helped organize and was a charter member of the Monroe Y.M.C.A., active in area Boy Scout organizations, and served with the Monroe Chamber of Commerce in many activities. He was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Monroe Scottish Rite Bodies.

A lifetime Methodist, he taught Men's Bible Classes for 35 years at Mansfield, Natchitoches and Monroe. He was a member of the Board of Stewards at all these churches and served for many years as the Methodist Louisiana Conference Lay Leader.

He is survived by his widow, the former Lois Zeagler; three daughters, Mrs. Allen W. Lee of Metairie, Mrs. Mary Ann Stapp of Winnsboro, and Mrs. James M. Poole of Bogalusa; a son, Dr. T. Scott Strickland of West Monroe; nine grandsons, including Robert A. Lee of Monroe; three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Robert A. Lee, Richard G. Lee, and Charles E. Lee, John Stanley Stapp, Roy Nolan Stapp Jr., Paul F. Stapp, James W. Poole Jr. and Martin C. Poole.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the William Wood Bible Class of First United Methodist Church of Monroe.

Lee, of Metairie, Mrs. Mary Ann Stapp, of Winnsboro, La. and Mrs. James M. Poble [sic Poole], of Bogalusa, La., Dr. T. Scott Strickland of West Monroe, La., also survived by 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 22, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, Monroe, La.

Interment in Welcome Home Cemetery, Grayson, La.

Visitation 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Monroe, La.
