J. L. McDaniel

Born J.L. (initials only) McDaniel on July 22, 1918 at Carbon, Texas. J.L. was the third of six sons born to Carl Newton McDaniel and Gertie Barnett McDaniel. J.L. grew up at Carbon, graduating from Carbon High School in 1937. He served as airplane crew chief in the 522nd Fighter Squadron of the United States Army during World War ll from 1942 to 1945. Battles and campaigns noted during his military career include Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Rhineland, Northern and Southern France, and Rome-Arno. On February 21, 1947 he married Mary Lee Etta Fleming. J.L. and Mary raised five children on a farm south of Carbon. J.L. worked at Hood King Motor Co., the Eastland Soil Conservation office and for the county of Eastland as well as farming and ranching his entire life. Mary preceded J.L. in death November 1998.

J.L. will long be remembered for his love, devotion and humor to his family and friends. He was a member of the Church of Christ and always lived his life as a Christian soldier for the Lord. In his final years of life, he demonstrated an enormous amount of courage and fortitude to continue life with such a positive attitude. One of his favorite sayings was, ``I gotta' make it, I have no choice.''

J.L. is survived by two daughters, Betty Joyner of Austin, and Jenett Pierce of Ft. Worth, two sons, J.C. and Kenneth both of Carbon, one brother Leao of Abilene, four grandsons, Chris and Danny Webb of Fort Worth, Jeremy and Travis Joyner of Austin. Also preceding him in death was his youngest daughter, Katha Lynn and grandson, Kelly Webb/ Brothers, Cody, J.E. (Short), Lee Roy and Charles preceded him in death as well.
