James D. Burke

Services for James D. Burke, 91, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park, with Reverend James H. Powell officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Burke was born March 29, 1913, in Angelina County, Texas, the son of the late Arthur Lee and Eva Wynona (McCall) Burke. He died Monday, January 24, 2005, in a local nursing facility.

Mr. Burke was a retired petroleum geologist, and had worked for McClain & Burke Consulting Geologists. He had resided in Corpus Christi since 1946, and had previously resided in Houston. Mr. Burke was a member of the Corpus Christi Rotary Club, charter member of the Corpus Christi Geological Society, member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists. He served in the United States Marines during World War II. Mr. Burke was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. James Lee and Louann Burke of Salt Lake City, Utah and Bryan Nolen and Judy Burke of Austin; granddaughters, Bryanne Nicole Burke of Rockwall, Shannon Burke and Lynzy Burke, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother and sister-in-law, Ward R. and Anna Bell Burke of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Ilene N. Cornick of Lufkin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Verdell Burke, on April 10, 2003; and by his sister, Louise Sproull.
