J. L. (Cotton) Carter Dies In Merced, Cal.

James L. (Cotton) Carter of Merced, Calif., a Brownwood resident for many years, died Friday morning in Merced.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Merced with Solis & Seavy Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Some 10 years ago Mr. Carter was manager of the Bilton Tire Store in Brownwood and was with the tire department of the local Firestone Store before moving to Merced in the late '40s. He had been employed by Firestone at Merced.

Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Gladys Kirksey; his mother, Mrs. Ed Carter of Merced; two brothers, Clarence of Florida and Jack Carter, believed to be in Washington, D. C., or New York, and two sisters, Mrs. Horace Gotcher of California and Mrs. Pauline Smith of Florida.

Mrs. Bettie Carter of Florida of 306 W. Baker, Brownwood, is an aunt. Her husband, the late Charlie Carter, was a brother of Cotton Carter's father, Ed Carter, who died in California several years ago.

Mrs. Margie Kirksey, mother of Mrs. Carter, moved from her home, 906 Ninth, Brownwood, to Merced last February.

Mr. Carter and Miss Kirksey were married here about 20 years ago.
