Rites Today For Victim Of Shooting

RAYVILLE (Special) -- Funeral services for shooting victim James McDaniel, 24, of Winnsboro, were scheduled to be held 2:30 p.m. today at Coax Baptist Church with the Rev. Doyle Adams officiating.

Mr. McDaniel died at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe early Monday after he was shot in the head with a .22-caliber rifle Sunday at a rural home near Baskin.

The shooting was a culmination of events that included a chase between another auto and Mr. McDaniel's following a bottle-throwing incident.

Charged with murder in the case is Willie Lee Ellis, 24, Negro, of route one, Winnsboro.

Ellis is being held without bond in the Richland Parish jail at Rayville. Mr. McDaniel was walking toward Ellis' auto when the shooting occurred, authorities said.

Burial was scheduled in Coax Cemetery under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Winnsboro.

Prayer services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. at Mulhearn chapel.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Betty McDaniel; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McDaniel; two brothers, John Frank McDaniel Jr. and Tony Gilbert McDa[n]iel, all of Winnsboro; four sisters, Mrs. James Lowe of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Jane Regar of Winnsboro, Mrs. W. R. Honeycutt of Angola and Miss Judy Lynn McDaniel of Winnbsoro.
