DIED FROM INJURIES

James Brogan Hit by Engine on N. O., M. & C. Railroad

As he was on his way home late last Friday night, James Brogan, while walking on the track of the of the New Orleans, Mobile, and Chicago railroad was struck and run over by an engine near the overhead bridge in the north part of the city.

It is thought that Mr. Brogan was walking close to the track when the engine struck him and knocked him down. In falling, it is evident Mr. Brogan fell in such a position as to catch his left leg under the wheels of the engine cutting it off entirely.

This occurred about 12 o'clock Friday night, and the unfortunate man lay unconscious there until a short time after the engine had passed, when he was found by Mr. Darwin the switch engineer, who as on his way home. Mr. Darwin gave prompt notice to the train dispatcher, who promptly sent the switch engine and crew to the scene and had Mr. Brogan brought to the round house. Dr. McCormick, the company surgeon, was hasitly summoned, but when he reached Mr. Brogan's side, the injured man was near death's door. It is believed he died from loss of blood, as his leg was cut entirely off.

It was reported about town that Mr. Brogan had drawn quite a neat sum of money from one of the local banks on the afternoon of Friday and had it with him that night, but inquiry failed to verify the statement, as no money beyond a trifling amount was found on his person when taken to the roundhouse.

Deceased was an old citizen of Laurel and had friends that stood by him through life. The funeral took place Saturday afternoon and all that was mortal of Jame Brogan was laid to rest in Hickory Grove cemetery.
