James Chandler, voice of NCNB
James W. ``Jim'' Chandler, the local voice of NCNB National Bank of Florida, died Monday (March 18, 1991) at AMI Memorial Hospital. He was 58.
He died of cancer, bank officials said.
Since 1984, he had been a vice president and public affairs director at NCNB's Tampa headquarters and widely known in the business community.
A former newspaper journalist, Mr. Chandler joined NCNB in 1977 after seven years as public relations director for Dayton Press Inc., a publishing company in Dayton, Ohio, and 13 years as an internal communications manager in the steel industry with Allegheny International in Pittsburgh.
For NCNB, his first job was overseeing the corporation's financial publications.
Locally, he was a member of the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club, Public Relations Society of America, Producers Club of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the Committee of 100. He lived at 1724 Lake Magdalene Manor Drive, Tampa.
He also was a member of the board of directors of the Florida Chamber Management and a past director of the Florida Independent College Fund.
Mr. Chandler was born in Winnfield, La. After studying at Marietta College and West Liberty State College, he joined the Air Force. He was an information specialist and a reporter for Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Ruth; a daughter, Kay Lynne Stanland, and a son, Steven Michael, both of Shallotte, N.C.; his mother, Callie Jones Chandler, Winnfield; two brothers, Donald and Bobby Joe, both of Louisiana.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace, 10002 56th St. The Rev. Dave Rakes will officiate. Duval Funeral Home, Northside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society, 4251 Henderson Blvd., Tampa 33629.

NCNB public affairs director James W. Chandler dies at 58
James W. Chandler, a vice president and director of public affairs at NCNB National Bank of Florida, died Monday of cancer at AMI Memorial Hospital in Tampa. He was 58.
A native of Winnfield, La., he had lived in the Tampa area since 1983, coming from Charlotte, N.C.
At NCNB, Chandler oversaw public policy, community involvement, media and government relations and internal communications throughout the state.
He joined NCNB in 1977 after a 21-year career in public relations and communications in the steel and printing industries. Chandler served as director of public relations for Dayton Press Inc. in Dayton, Ohio, from 1971 until joining NCNB. He was manager of internal communications for Allegheny International in Pittsburgh from 1964-71.
A graduate of Winnfield High School, Chandler studied liberal arts at Marietta College in 1956-57 and West Liberty State College from 1958-60.
He began his career in communications in the military, where he served as information specialist and reporter for the U.S. Air Force Stars & Stripes newspaper in the early 1950s.
Chandler was a member of the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club, Public Relations Society of America, Producers Club of the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and Committee of 100.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Memorial services for James W. Chandler were at 2 p.m. March 21 in First Baptist Church.
Chandler, 58, of Tampa died March 18 at AMI Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Winnfield, La., and was a graduate of Winnfield High School. He was most recently vice president and director of public affairs at NCNB National Ban of Florida. He also served as director of public relations for the Dayton Press Inc, Dayton, Ohio. He was a graduate of Marietta College and West Liberty State College. He was a U.S. Air Force reporter for the Stars & Stripes newspaper.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Ruth Carter Chandler of Tampa; one daughter, Kay Lynne Stanland of Shallotte, N.C.; one son, Steven Michael Chandler of Shallotte, N.C.; his mother, Callie Jones Chandler of Dodson, La.; and two brothers, Donald Chandler and Bobby Joe Chandler, both of Winnfield, La.
