Martinville man dies Monday
A Martinville man was pronounced dead on arrival at Magee General Hospital Monday despite attempts by EMT's and members of the Magee rescue unit to revive him after the truck he was driving left the road.
James K. P. McCarty, 60, of Martinville died while at the wheel of his car from an apparent heart attack, according to the death certificate. He was apparently making a trip to a bank in Magee when the attack occurred and the truck he was driving left Highway 541 about two miles north of its intersection with 540 and about three miles south of his home, according to Magee Fire Chief Tommy Everett.
Howard Overby of Martinville was driving south along the road when he recognized the truck resting in the ditch with the motor still running. Overby stopped and saw McCarty slumped in the cab. He then drove to Jiffy Food Mart about three miles away and called the Magee Police Department.
According to Police Chief Beulah Lott, Overby was told to go back to the truck and wait until help arrived. The ambulance service and fire department rescue unit were then notified.
“Overby went back to the truck and waited. He turned off the engine before we arrived,” Everett said. “Several of our men tried to revive McCarty and then EMT's attempted to do the same on the way back to the hospital.”
McCarty was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Services for McCarty were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Magee with burial following in the Magee Cemetery. Ott and Lee Funeral Home of Morton was in charge of the services.
He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Elisabeth McCarty; a son, James Albert McCarty of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.; two daughters, Mrs. Steve Holland of Magee and Mrs. Billy Harding of Jackson; four brothers, Rayburn McCarty of Apopka, Fla., Harry Arnold McCarty and Louie McCarty both of Polkville and Claybon McCarty of Pearl; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Vanderslice of Bay Springs and one granddaughter, Challene Holland of Magee.
