Jean (Shirley) Hubbard
Jean Shirley Hubbard, age 77, a loving wife, mother, sister, cousin, and friend lost her courageous short term battle against heart disease on May 7, 2012 at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Jean was born July 1, 1934 in Vilonia, Arkansas, the daughter of Alton and Vivian Shirley. She spent her childhood traveling between the states of Arkansas and California. She graduated from high school in 1952 at Jacksonville, Arkansas. Her first career was working as an administrative aide in Little Rock, Arkansas. She began her second career as wife and mother when she married James Eugene Hubbard of Sikes, Louisiana in 1954 after they had met at a church convention in Little Rock. After theft marriage, they spent the first six years of their marriage following Eugene's jobs in Chama, New Mexico; Orange, Texas; and Sikes, Louisiana. They settled down in Winnfield, Louisiana in 1964 where she joyfully entered into the lives of many people in Winn Parish.
In recent years, Jean was rarely called by her real name. She was “Mother” to her three children, Byron, Candace, and Lowell. She was “Mimi” to her grandchildren, Holly, Melinda, Lathon, and Andrew, and step grandson, Taylor. She was also “Mimi” to her two great grandchildren, Josie, and Brendan. She was also “Mimi” to many others in the community.
The most cherished aspects of Jean's life were her family and her faith. The two were intertwined because she recognized her family as a gift from God. She was the family matriarch and was known as the rock of the family which was always a stabilizing force through good times and bad. Her home was always open to her children and grandchildren or anyone else when someone needed counseling, a shoulder to cry on, or someone with whom to share life's joys. Her wisdom, wit, and charm will be greatly missed. Mimi will be remembered for her laugh, genuine integrity, deep care for others, generosity, work ethic and love of life. Despite her diminutive physical stature, Jean leaves behind an immeasurable legacy of love that will sustain her family and be passed on to future generations.
We grieve her loss, and the depth of the loss experienced by her surviving husband Eugene. She leaves behind Byron, his wife Dewana, and their daughter, Melinda all of Winnfield, Louisiana. Also left is her daughter, Candace Gray, along with her husband Bob, and their son Andrew, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Grieving her loss is her son, Lowell and his wife Debra of Winnfield and Lowell's son Lathon and his wife Crystal also of Winnfield, and stepson, Taylor Jordan of Winnfield. Lowell's daughter Holly and her husband Nathan Newton and their children Josie and Brendan of Hodge, LA are greatly grieving the loss of their beloved Mimi. She also left behind one sister, Tommie Beaudry and husband Ron of Austin, AR, and two brothers, Vaughn and wife Tressie of Jacksonville, AR, and Maurice and wife Barbara of Cabot, AR. Mimi leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012, at 2:00. The service will be held at The Family Church, Winnfield, LA.
