Pioneer Citizen Dies

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 25, at Harmony Baptist Church for Jerry Horn McCarty, a member of one of Clarke County's oldest families. He died Friday night at his home in Harmony community, near Quitman, following an illness of several months. He was 89 years old.

Mr. McCarty was a successful farmer all of his long life, having been active in his work and interested in the affairs of his county, state, and nation until his health failed a few months ago. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Minnie Lee Crane McCarty; two sons, Jack of Pachuta and J. P. of Atlanta, Ga.; four daughters, Miss Maurice McCarty of New Orleans, Mrs. Mattie Hargrove of Quitman, Mrs. Lyda Miller of Meridian and Mrs. Cliff West of Enterprise; one brother, William A. McCarty, Quitman; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Archie McIntyre, Harmony Baptist Church, the Rev. W. L. Meadows, Quitman Baptist Church and the Rev. Frank Rush, Enterprise Baptist Church. Mr. W. Zack sang “Sunrise Tomorrow”.

Active pallbearers were S. F. Kennedy, Francis Stevens, Arthur Brashier, Monroe Elam, Willie Sanders and Cecil Boney.

Honorary pallbearers were the nephews.
