Jesse Wilborn Hammett
Funeral services for Jesse Wilborn Hammett were to be held today, June 14, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel in Minden. Officiating was the Rev. Tee Don White. Interment was to follow at Whispering Pines Cemetery near Dixie Inn.
Jesse Hammett died on June 11, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born in Cotton Valley on Aug. 28, 1927, to Henry L. and Effie Curry Hammett. He was the youngest of six brothers and one sister.
Jesse, following in his older brothers' military footsteps, joined the Navy at age 15. He served his country proudly and honorably on the USS Dempsey where, he was cited by Admiral Nimitz for saving a shipmate from drowning.
During his service, Jesse received five battle stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. His military service helped shape the man that was loved and respected by his family and friends throughout his life. He was proud to have served in World War II and was an active advocate for veterans and an active member of the Underage Veterans Association.
Jesse started his career as a roustabout for Sunray Oil Company in the early 50s. By the mid 60s he had worked his way to the position of plant superintendent for Placid Oil Company. He left Placid Oil Company after many years and began doing consultant work all over the country and in many foreign countries. He retired in his early 70s.
Jesse was a 50-year Mason and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Homer, Louisiana.
Preceding Jesse in death were his parents, brothers Isaac N. Hammett, William H. Hammett, Robert W. Hammett and Tommie M. Hammett, and sister Dorothy H. Durham.
Surviving Jesse is his wife Lona Lee Hammett of Homer; brother, Jacob B. Hammett of Sibley; daughter, Debra Hammett Bolton and husband, Barry of Natchitoches, Louisiana; sons, Danny W. Hammett and wife, Dolores of Natchez, Mississippi and Jesse W. Hammett, Jr. and wife, Dell of San Antonio; stepdaughters, Twyla Lee Moore and husband, Robert of Minden, Loyce Lee Hightower and husband, Pat of Homer and Donna Clements of Homer; grandchildren, Rebecca Shultz, Misty Dees, Maggie Harrell, Nikki Hammett, Trevor Hammett, Joshua Hammett and Justin Hammett; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Josh Hammett, Mike Hammett, Ricky Hammett, Ben Hammett, Andy Reeves, Buddy Bolton and J. L. Dees.
