Three die in Carroll accident

Three Carroll County residents died Wednesday in a car-truck accident on U.S. Highway 82 one mile west of McCarley Junction in Carroll County.

The three passengers in the car, identified as Mrs. J.H. “Norene” Montgomery, 80, Mrs. Jessie McDaniel, 75, and Miss Sarah Estelle Montgomery, 59, were killed when their vehicle was struck by an oncoming 18-wheeler loaded with lumber.

The driver of the car, Mrs. Monnie M. Bowles, 74, of Inverness was injured in the crash. She remains in stable condition in Tyler Holmes Hospital in Winona.

According to an investigating officer of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mrs. Bowles apparently pulled onto the highway from a sideroad into the path of the 18-wheeler.

Mrs. Montgomery and Mrs. McDaniel were sisters of Mrs. Bowles and Miss Montgomery was the daughter of Mrs. Montgomery.

National Funeral Home of Grenada will be in charge of funeral arrangements for all three victims.

A double funeral will be held for Mrs. Montgomery and Miss Montgomery 10 a.m. Friday, August 7, at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church near Carrollton. Burial will be in the old Mt. Pisgah Cemetary [sic Cemetery].

Survivors of Mrs. Montgomery include three daughters, Mrs. Ann Crowley of Mathiston; Mrs. Rachel Mixon of Greenwood; Mrs. Faye Blanchard of Reserve, La.; and one son, Ross Montgomery of Greenwood; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Smith of Winona; and Mrs. Monnie Bowles of Inverness; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Miss Montgomery was the sister of Crowley, Mixon, Blanchard and Ross Montgomery.

Services for Mrs. McDaniel will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Longview Methodist Church near Carrollton with burial in the church cemetary [sic cemetery].

Mrs. McDaniel was the widow of the late Lindsey McDaniel.

She is survived by one daughter, Miss Margaret Allis McDaniel of Dallas, Tex.; two sons, Chuck McDaniel of Grenada and Larry McDaniel of Carrollton; and four grandchildren.
