Jewell L. Whittington

Jewell Lee Whittington, 85, of Liberty, died Sept. 6, 2009, at his residence, after a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 tonight at Brown's Funeral Home in Liberty, then noon Wednesday until services there at 2 p.m. Dr. Martin Hayden, Chaplain James Cason and the Rev. Ernest Whittington will officiate. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery.

Mr. Whittington was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Liberty, to Louis and Nancy Etheridge Whittington.

He was a member of Enterprise Baptist Church, where he was an inactive deacon. Mr. Whittington was employed for 27 years with General Gas-American Oil. He had extensive knowledge of butane and propane services.

He had been an employee of the Town of Liberty for 17 years. After retirement, he enjoyed children in their daycare, gardening, growing and sharing watermelons and planting flowers. He loved God, his family, church, his community and the people in it.

Mr. Whittington was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Amos Louis Whittington; his son-in-law, Jerry Laird; three granddaughters, Lynn Gay, Linda Kay and Marcia Lee Laird; and four brothers, Ray, T.J., Jimmy and Bobby Whittington.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn Marie Whittington of Liberty; a daughter, Margaret Laird of Liberty; a sister, Bertha Johnson of Liberty; a brother, the Rev. Ernest Whittington and his wife Bettie of Liberty; a host of nieces and nephews; and ``extended family'' who have been with him during his illness.

Pallbearers will be members of the Men's Sunday School Class at Enterprise Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice of Brookhaven.
