Joan Cockerham
December 30, 1931 - May 30, 2008

Joan Cockerham, daughter of the late Albert Leroy Barlow and Zora Iva Barlow, the fifth of seven children, was born Dec. 30, 1931. She died Friday, May 30, 2008, at the age of 76.

Joan was affectionately known as Jo Ann to her loved ones and acquaintances. She was born in Maypearl and received her education through Maypearl public schools. She graduated from Maypearl High School in 1948 where she played on the varsity basketball team.

Joan was active in Waxahachie women's softball leagues during the early 1960s and played in and helped organize and promote league tennis in the 1970s.

Joan loved to sew and was talented at crafting stuffed animal toys, to the delight of the many children who received them as gifts.

She was a member of the Red Oak Church of Christ.

Joan is survived by her two sons, Sidney Joe and Roy; daughter Julia Zavala; two grandchildren, Jillian Arthur and husband Dusty and Jonothan Jaggers; two brothers, William and Glen Barlow; two sisters, Iva Richards and Betty Sullivan; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Sidney Julius; sisters Elizabeth Butler and Elsie McAdams.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the Red Oak Cemetery. Wayne England will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday evening in the chapel of the Boze Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home, 511 W. Main St., Waxahachie.
