CANTON -- Joe Burns Hardy Sr., 75, a retired farmer and cattleman, died of gunshot wounds Wednesday at his home. Authorities speculated he was shot when he interrupted a burglary.

Services are 1 p.m. today at Breeland Funeral Home of Canton with burial in Canton Cemetery.

Mr. Hardy was a lifelong resident of Madison County.

Survivors include; wife, Willie Mae; son, Joe B. Hardy Jr. of Canton; daughter, Rita Hardy Graham of Canton; brothers, Henry Hardy of Clinton and Clifton Hardy of Flora; sisters, Rosa Clingan and Josephine Mason, both of Ridgeland, and Dorothy Oswalt of Clinton; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
