Joe Adams

Joe Peyton Adams, age 82, of Magnolia, Arkansas died Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Magnolia Hospital. Born February 25, 1926 in Nebo, Louisiana in LaSalle Parish to James and Lea Adams, he was preceded in death by his parents and his son Gary Wayne Adams in 1990. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Homer Adams, his sisters Annie Mae White and Augustine White and parents-in-law, Jim and Ella Wyatt.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Ernestine Adams of Magnolia; sons, Rusty Adams and wife Candy of Magnolia, Arkansas and Darrel Adams and wife Rhonda of Magnolia, Arkansas; grandchildren, Shane Adams and wife Sheri of Magnolia, Arkansas, Heather Chandler and husband Kyle of Benton, Arkansas and Josh Adams of Fayetteville, Arkansas; great grandchildren, Peyton Adams of Magnolia and Braden Waller and Madeline Chandler of Benton, Arkansas; brother, Don Adams and wife Betty of Winnsboro, Louisiana; sisters, Rita Smith of West Monroe, Louisiana and Lena Proctor of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Loretta Ruth and husband Bill of Laurel, Mississippi, Ginger Garms and husband Fred of Louisville, Kentucky, and Doris Lewis and husband David of Shreveport, Louisiana; nieces and nephews who adored “Uncle Joe” include Terry Adams, Melvin Campbell, Sandy McDonald, Michelle Dougherty, Becky Hurt, Phil Proctor, Steve Proctor, Danny Proctor, Scotty Adams, Vicki Adams, Jamie Adams, Becky Sanville, Edward Ruth, Stacy Ruth, Allison Morris, Mike Alexander, Jeff Alexander, Tommy Johnson, and Chris Johnson. He leaves a host of treasured friends.

After returning from World War II service in the Army Air Corp, Joe began his career in the glass business in Shreveport, Louisiana then Monroe, Louisiana working for PPG. In 1966, he purchased Magnolia Glass & Mirror and moved his family to Magnolia, Arkansas.

In addition to his great love for his family and people, he loved cooking and the outdoors. Joe cooked for the masses in the community such as Magnolia High School athletic department, Southern Arkansas University athletic department and other groups in the community. He often prepared breakfast which included fried squirrel, biscuits and gravy for a host of friends. Joe leaves a legacy of his grilling and marinating recipes, as well as his biscuit recipe. Joe was a people-loving, generous husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Sunday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with nephew Bro. Steve Proctor and Bro. David Wood officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
