Joe W. Thornton

Services for Joe W. Thornton, 71, were at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Willow Bayou Baptist Church in Tallulah with the Rev. Charles Gaston officiating. Masonic graveside services were in Silver Cross Cemetery in Tallulah under direction of Crothers Funeral Home of Tallulah.

Mr. Thornton died Tuesday at Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah after a short illness.

He was a native of Sandy Hook, Miss., and was a resident of Madison Parish for the past 50 years. He was a retired farmer, a past member and president of Madison Parish Police Jury, and had served two years on the executive committee of the police jury association. He was also past president of the 5th District Police Jury Association, a member of the Madison Parish Hospital Service District, and an Army veteran of World War II. Thornton was a member of the Post 100 of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and a member and deacon of Willow Bayou Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eloyse M. Thornton of Tallulah; one son, Billy Thornton of Tallulah; his mother, Mrs. Letha M. Thornton of Tallulah; one sister, Mrs. Wilma Ray of Tallulah; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Stanley Harmon, Richard Thames, Ronnie Bedgood, John Pritchett, Horace Russell, Luther Bishop, Armon Cox, and Clint Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were past and present members of the Madison Parish Police Jury.
