John A. Smith

Funeral services for John A. Smith, 78, of Winnsboro were held Friday at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Basco officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home of Winnsboro.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001 at Franklin Medical after a sudden illness. He was a resident of Franklin Parish, retired farmer and served in the United States Army during WWII under General Patton. He was a deacon and member of New Zion Baptist Church for over 54 years.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Victoria Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Victorine “Vicky” Smith, Winnsboro; children, Glen Ray Smith, Winnsboro; Jeannie Kay Goodman, Chase; Johnnie Sue Jones, Baskin; and Vickie Dephine Purvis, Chase; brother, Charles Smith, Winnsboro; sisters, Clara Bruce, Chase; Neva Phillips, Winnsboro; and Eva Martin, Gilbert; seven grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Glen Smith, John A. Smith, Benjamin Purvis, Nathaniel Jones, John Day Jr. and Eric Smith.
