NATCHITOCHES -- Services for Dr. John A. Jones will be at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Blanchard-St. Denis with Dr. Troy Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in Memory Lawn Cemetery.

Jones, 87, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday in Natchitoches Parish Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Jones was a former Northwestern State University professor and dean of education. He joined the Northwestern faculty in 1943 as principal of the Warren Easton Elementary Laboratory School and served in that capacity until 1949 when he was appointed director of teacher training. In 1954, he became dean of the College of Education, the position he held until his retirement in 1965.

In 1982 Northwestern awarded Jones the rank of professor and dean emeritus of education.

He earned the bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University and the master's and doctorate degrees from Louisiana State University.

In 1983 Jones established a trust with a $10,000 gift to the NSU Foundation to be used for scholarships to students majoring in education. The scholarships are awarded in memory of his wife, Jewell Bailey Jones, who was a supervising teacher for many years in the elementary laboratory school at Northwestern.
