J. R. Dunn
Funeral services for J.R. Dunn, 88, of Purcell were held Oct. 27, 2010 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home.
Mr. Dunn passed away Sunday, October 24, 2010 in Oklahoma City.
He was born Aug. 3, 1922 in Maysville, Okla., the third child of five children born to John Russell Dunn and Bertie McCarty Dunn. J. R. grew up a farm boy in the Maysville and Wanette area. He moved to Wayne, Okla., his senior year and graduated with the class of 1941.
On Oct. 30, 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and proudly served his country for three years before being honorably discharged in 1945. While in the service, J.R. was placed on a B-24 Liberator Bomber as a Tail Gunner.
On Jan. 9, 1945, he married the love of his life, Jewel Evelyn Orr and together they raised one son, Brad. During their first several years of marriage, J. R. taught gunnery school in Florida. They later moved back to the Maysville area where he began farming and worked nights at Tinker Air Force Base. After retiring in the late 1970's from Tinker as a data management engineer, he continued to farm, raise cattle and maintain other farm animals.
Throughout his life, J. R.'s hobbies included camping and trout fishing. He also loved flying, especially his Piper Cub airplane and he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was an active member and Elder of the Wayne Church of Christ and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertie Dunn; an infant sister, Yuanetta Dunn and an adult sister, Betty York.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jewel Dunn, of the home; son, Brad Dunn and wife, Karen, of Broken Bow, Okla.; granddaughter, Brittany Dunn of Edmond; great-grandson, Justice; one brother, James Dunn and wife, T. J., of Columbia, Tenn.; one sister, Viola Cannon of Massachusetts, and other relatives and friends.
