John Eugene Hargrove, 85, of 843 Fairview St., a retired foreign service officer of the U.S. government, died of heart failure Sunday at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with graveside services at 3 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home.

Mr. Hargrove served as first secretary of the U.S. embassies in a number of countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. At his retirement, he was consul to the government of South Africa. He returned to Mississippi in 1965, making his home in Jackson. He was a deacon of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: wife, Julie; daughter, Winifred Sharp of Gulfport; sister, Glinda Hargrove of Jackson; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
