Womack, BMA Minister, Former Editor Dies

John Franklin Womack, 80, died June 7 in Albany, Ga. A native of Texas, he surrendered to preach May 7, 1937 at Union (now College Avenue) Baptist Church in Carrollton, Tex. and was ordained by the church May 19, 1938. His first pastorate was Five Mile Baptist Church in Dallas, Tex., and he pastored several other churches in Texas, Arkansas and California. He also spent two years as a missionary in Mexico, where he pastored the English-speaking services of the First Baptist Church in Mexico City.

He also led in the organization of Bethel Baptist Church in Santa Ana, Calif., the first BMA church in California, and founded and edited the Golden State Baptist, the BMA of California newspaper, for 12 years, and served as president of the Golden State Bible College.

After attending Jacksonville College at Jacksonville, Tex., he continued his education at Southwestern Theological Seminary and the Fundamental Bible Institute in Fort Worth, Tex. He also did correspondence work through the American Bible College in Pineland, Fla. and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree by the school in 1960. His name is listed in the 1965-66 edition of Who's Who in the West, and the 1974 edition of Who's Who in Arkansas.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Womack of Sylvester, Ga.; one daughter, Lichah Huiras; two sons, Jimmy and Doran; and eight grandchildren, all of Georgia. Memorial services will be held June 11 in Albany, Ga. with W.L. West, Jr., officiating.
