SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 29, 2000 in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Shreveport, LA for John H. Johnson, Jr., 78, who died Saturday, February 26, 2000.
Dr. Jon Stubblefield, pastor of First Baptist Church will officiate, assisted by Dr. Scott L. Tatum. Pastor Emeritus of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Minden Cemetery in Minden, LA at 3:00 p.m.
Mr. Johnson was born in Bogalusa, LA and grew up in Minden, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Johnson, Sr. and Stella Boyd Johnson.
During World War II, he served in the 102nd Infantry Division in France and Germany.
He was Purchasing Agent for Placid Oil Company for 10 years, Regional Tubular Manager for Continental-EM-SCO for 20 years and Sovereign Supply for 8 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Shreveport, LA, where he served as a deacon and a former chairman of the Finance Committee. He was recently made Deacon Emeritus. He was formerly a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church where he was a choir member and taught a junior boys' Sunday School Class.
He was a member of The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, The Petroleum Club of Shreveport, The Kiwanis Club of Shreveport and a volunteer for the Literacy Program, Volunteers of America at Centenary College.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Davenport Johnson; two daughters, Marilyn Johnson King of Shreveport and Marsha Johnson Enterline of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Alicia Anne King of Carrollton, Texas, James Richardson King, Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas, Sarah Elizabeth Enterline and Claire Lafitte Enterline of Dayton, Ohio.
He is also survived by one sister. Flora J. Robinson of Powhattan. Virginia and one brother, Lars G. Johnson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; also two nieces and one nephew.
Pallbearers will be Milton L. Williams, Tom Elgin, T.J Mims, H. Dalton Dean, Dala Smith, Harold Summers, Morris Caraway, and George Plaxco. Honorary pallbearers will be W. Peyton Shehee, Gwen Morrison, Tom Pope, Robert Jackson, K.D. Langford and James Turner.
The family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church, Shreveport or The John and Mildred Johnson Scholarship Fund at Centenary College or to a charity of the donor's choice.
The family wishes to express deep thanks to the staff at the Glen Retirement Home and Dubois Unit at Schumpert for their love and care during his illness.
