Three Killed In Accident On Highway
Three persons were killed, two in the same family, in a one-car accident on Highway 35 about three miles north of Harperville at about 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
Highway Patrolman William Richardson, who investigated, identified the victims as Walnut Grove Night Marshal Billy Wayne Gilbert, 40; of Walnut Grove; Billy Wayne Gilbert, Jr., 19, of Walnut Grove; and John L. Griffin, 58, of Walnut Grove.
The patrolman said the three were riding in a Ford Bronco owned by Billy Wayne Jr. and driven by his father. The car was headed south. Another passenger in the car, Larry W. Sanders, 23, Walnut Grove, was injured and is under treatment at Lackey Hospital.
According to the investigation, the right front tire blew out and the car went off the road on the right side of the highway. When the driver pulled it back to the road, he lost control and the vehicle went over the other side, turning end over end and stopping upside down in a deep ditch.
Patrolman Richardson said all three apparently were killed instantly.
The bodies were taken to Wilcox Funeral Home at Carthage for burial arrangements.
