Bednar

John Matthew Bednar, a student, died Monday at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero. He was 11. The cause of death is undetermined pending test results, according to the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office.

John was a lifelong resident of Harvey and had completed fifth grade at Arden Cahill Academy where he was a member of the swim team, drama club, baseball team and soccer team. He was the state fifth-grade winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest. He was a student at Art Monroe Tae Kwon Do plus, held a second-degree black belt and earlier this year was named a national grand champion in black belt form. He was an Arrow of Light winner in Cub Scouts and was a participant and winner in numerous 5k and 10k races and in piano, swimming and karate competitions.

Survivors include his parents, John Michael Bednar and Nancy McKaskle Bednar; two brothers, Timothy and Chad Bednar; and his grandparents, Mina Mckaskle and John and Mary Bednar.

The funeral was Thursday. Burial was in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery.
