John Peyton
John Ray Peyton, Sr. 78, of Lafayette, Louisiana passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. John fought a valiant and courageous 4 year battle with cancer. John Ray Peyton was born February 2, 1934 in Jena, Louisiana to the late George Oscar Peyton and Dollie Ford Peyton. John was a 1953 graduate of Jena High School where he lettered in football.
John had a very successful career in the oilfield. He began his career at Sunray DX Oil Company which was merged to form Sun Oil Company in 1968. John was a drilling foreman for Sun Oil for 27 years. He drilled oil wells all over the world including Saudi Arabia, the North Sea, Indonesia, the Gulf of Mexico and many wells throughout Texas and Louisiana. After his retirement from Sun Oil in 1992, John then became a drilling consultant and worked for various operators. John was a friend to many and worked hard to impart his special skills to those he mentored in the industry.
Survivors include his wonderful loving wife of 58 years, Helen Herrington Peyton; his three children, Julie Peyton Sanders and husband Robert Scott Sanders of Austin, TX, Christie Kay Jumonville of Covington, LA, and John Ray Peyton, Jr. of Williston, ND; and his sister Emma Katherine Day of Elizabethtown, KY. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Kellie Rogers and husband Doug, Ami Peyton-Kleiner, Neil Angelle and wife Angela, Katelin Jumonville, Hallie Jumonville, Patrick Jumonville and Austin Tedesco. He is also survived by five great grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at First Baptist Church, Lafayette, LA, with Dr. Steve Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Lafayette, LA. Friends may visit with the Peyton Family at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette on Monday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and at Delhomme Funeral Home on Tuesday from 8:30 A.M. until time of services Tuesday at First Baptist Church. The John Ray Peyton , Sr. Family requests that any expressions of sympathy in the form of donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Lafayette. The family would like to thank Heart of Hospice for their loving care of our father during his illness and our church family and friends for all their many expressions of love and support. Pallbearers will be Brent Talbot, JW Gotreaux, David Hamner, Neil Angelle, Patrick Jumonville and Austin Tedesco.
