John R. Dawson Sr.

GLOSTER -- John Roger Dawson Sr., 76, of Gloster, died April 20, 1994, at Natchez Regional Hospital.

Services were held at 3:30 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home of Gloster, with the Revs. Robert Toney and Keith Zachary officiating. Burial was in New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Dawson was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Amite County. He was the son of the late Harper and Ruby Dawson.

He was a retired logger and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church of Gloster.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Mann Dawson, Eugene “Boy” Dawson, Wilmer Dawson and Elmer Glenn Dawson; two children, Lemoyne Whittington Amarel and Angela Claire Burkett; and one grandchild.

He is survived by his wife, Flora Mae Dawson of Gloster; six daughters, Louise Freeman of Adona, Ark., Lorraine Black of Ackerman, Marion Freeman of Prairieville, La., Gwen Whittington of Liberty, Sherry Cook of Perryville, Ark., and Kathy Thomas of Gloster; two sons, John Roger Dawson Jr. and Kevin Dawson, both of Gloster; five sisters, Lazelle Boykin of Lake St. John, La., Vasser Boykin of Zachary, La., Lexie Whittington and Evelyn Havard, both of Baton Rouge, La., and Kathryn Thornton of Natchez; one brother, Billy Dawson of Pearl; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
