JOHN THOMAS EMMONS
Funeral services celebrating the life of John Thomas Emmons will be held at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, March 17, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. with interment following at Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery. Officiating will be the Reverend Bill Stowell. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2006.
He was born May 19, 1941, in Pleasant Hill, LA, and left his earthly home on Wednesday, March 15, 2006, after a brave fight with cancer. John accepted Christ at a young age at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Having lived in Shreveport for 60 years, John was known and loved by many. He graduated from Fair Park High School in 1959, and lettered in football for three years. John owned and operated two businesses with two partners, worked for H. G. Angle Company, and later retired from Berg Service.
John enjoyed entertaining friends with his gourmet cooking and gardening gave him great joy; however, fishing was his great passion. He served as president of the Ark-La-Tex Bass Club and was a member of ASHRAE. Saltwater fishing became his favorite pastime thanks to Capt. John L. Taylor.
Preceding him in death were his parents Thomas Ardis and Lucille Gregory Emmons; and his brother, Michael Emmons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Connie Shannon Emmons; two sisters, Martha Kay Peters of Shreveport, LA, and Mary Beth Lawrason and husband Butch of Marshall, TX; special brother, Jimmy Pierce of Shreveport, La.; special cousin Dr. John Gregory and wife, Diana of Texarkana, TX.; and, a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews: Bryan Peters of Baton Rouge, LA; Charles Peters of Ruston, LA; Greg Lawrason of Marshall, TX; Kenneth Shannon, Jr. of Pelham, AL; Keith Shannon of Baton Rouge, LA; and special nephews, Brian Walmsley of Greenwood, LA, Daniel Pierce of Shreveport, LA.; and, Godchild Scott Barritt of Arvada, CO. Honorary pallbearer is his Godchild Reid Barritt of Arvada, CO. Each of these young men was extremely special to their ``Uncle John.''
The family gives thanks to all their friends, family, and neighbors, who have so faithfully supported them during this long illness.
The family expresses gratitude to his doctors and their staffs: Dr. P. V. Blanchard and Vickey, Dr. Kyle Barnett, Dr. Robert Nickelson and Andrea, and Dr. Charles R. Byrd. In addition, special thanks to the staff of Willis Knighton Hospital North and the superb staff of the W/K Hospice. A special thanks to his sisters, Martha Kay and Mary Beth, and special friends, Mary Walmsley and Linda Elliott for their care and comfort during his final days.
