John T. Odom, 89, Dies Wednesday After Long Illness
John T. Odom, 89, of Winnfield, died in a local hospital at 11:10 a.m.
Wednesday following an illness of several weeks. Funeral arrangements
were incomplete when The News-American went to press.
Born on October 7, 1859, the deceased was married three times, first in
1882 to Alice Maxwell, who died in 1905, then in 1907 to Kattie Lancaster
Britton of Ruston, who succumbed in 1935, and in 1936 to Frances Corley
Gates, who survives his death.
Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Charley L. Odom of New
Orleans and
J. C. Odom of Portland, Ore.; four daughters, Minnie Lee Odom of
Natchitoches, Eunice Odom of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. G. W. Harper of LeCompte,
La., and Mrs. Wirt Parker of Alexandria; a brother, W. F. Odom of Ruston,
and a sister, mrs. W. S. Avery of Longview, Texas, and 18 grandchildren
and a number of great grandchildren.
He was a member of the Baptist church and attended the Winnfield First and
Laurel Heights Churches for many years, and was a member of the Masonic
order for many years.
