J. Gomes Dies At 59

Joseph Gomes, bartender at Meet the Quinns Tavern in Mill Valley for 10 years, died today of cancer in a local hospital after [a] long illness.

The 59-year-old man had lived in Mill Valley 14 years, coming to California in 1921. He was a native of the Azores Islands.

Gomes worked as a rigger in Marinship during World War II and later worked at the Plaza in Sausalito and at a San Rafael bar before coming to Quinn's. His home in Mill Valley was at 11 Central Drive.

He was a member of San Rafael Aerie 256, Fraternal Order of Eagles and local 126 of the Bartenders and Culinary Workers Union.

Gomes is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gomes; two brothers, John T. Gomes of Tracy and Antonio T. Gomes of the Azores; two sisters, Mrs. Eugina Vaz of the Azores and Mrs. Maria Esteinaco Coelho of Brazil.

The Rosary will be recited at the Chapel of Russell and Gooch Mortuary in Mill Valley at 8 p.m. tomorrow. There will be no mass.
