Joseph Michael “Joe” Bennett
January 7, 1947 - June 14, 2016

Joseph Michael “Joe” Bennett, age 69, of San Augustine, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, in San Augustine.

Joe was born January 7, 1947, in Tyler, Texas to Lydia Edith (Gaar) and Dr. Noel Thomas Bennett. He graduated from San Augustine High School where he played football and was an all around athlete. After graduation, he attended Centenary College and Stephen F. Austin. He served in the Navy during Vietnam. While serving in the Navy, Joe was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and served as an Aviation Fire Control Technician. In later years, Joe was the property manager of the local family farm. His two greatest loves were his family and his music. He was also a devout Christian.

He is survived by his brothers, Dr. Kenneth R. Bennett and his wife, Lucette (Blount) of Jackson, MS; George Bennett and his wife, Elsie (Chase) of San Augustine; Noel T. Bennett, Jr., and his wife, Vickie (Dostal) of Ft. Worth; and Schultz Bennett, Ph.D. of Mesa, Arizona; sisters, Gaar Bennett of San Augustine and Annella Nelson and her husband, Brad of Bossier City, Louisiana; aunts, Cam Gaar of Dallas and Maxine Mayo of Sterling, Virginia; special mother, Doris Swindle of San Augustine; and special friend, Edward Wilson of San Augustine; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lydia Edith (Gaar) Bennett and Dr. Noel Thomas Bennett; brother, John Michael Bennett; and step-mother, Eloise (Adkins) Bennett.

Pallbearers are: Brendan Bennett, John Bennett, Steven Bennett, Joel Smollen, John Smollen, Phil Sublett and Edward Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are: David Bennett, Freeman Bennett, Rev. Fred Dade, Bradley Nelson, Brett Smollen and Luke Smollen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 11 a.m. in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Gerald Sowell officiating. Interment will be in the Liberty Hill Memorial Garden in San Augustine, Texas. Visitation will be Friday, June 17, 2016, from the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 West Columbia Street, San Augustine, Texas.
