Joy T. Evans
Joy Turner Evans, resident of Baton Rouge, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at her home at the age of 80.
She was born on November 15, 1932 on a small farm in Bentley, LA to Seyburn and Evie Turner. Within two weeks of Joy's birth, both of her parents passed away. She was raised by her Aunt Pinkie and Uncle Jim, who would become her Momma and Daddy. By the age of 18, Joy moved to Baton Rouge and attended Spencer Business College. She married the love of her life, Rolland P. Evans, in 1950 and by 1957 Rolland and Joy had established their family with three children. Joy worked for the State of Louisiana for over 40 years in various capacities including the Department of Civil Service, and the Contractors Department and Licensing Board where she started as a part-time stenographer and eventually became an Administrator until her retirement. She was instrumental in the national development of the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) and served as Executive Secretary and Treasurer. She was able to travel all over the United States with her NASCLA activities. Joy was a longtime member of Parkview Baptist Church where she was active in the Benevolence Committee and taught children's Sunday School. Joy loved her family tremendously and enjoyed spending time with them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland P. Evans; son, G.P. “Buddy” Evans; sister, Marie T. Williams; brothers, Harrison Turner, Riley Turner, and Leslie Turner; her parents, Seyburn and Evie Turner; and her Momma and Daddy, Ellen Rebecca “Pinkie” and James “Jim” Cryer.
Joy will be greatly missed by her children, Sharon Gilbert and her husband Ronnie, and Turner Evans and his wife Susan; brother, Phillip Owen Turner and his wife Jackie; grandchildren, Bradley Cozier, Megan Gilbert, Bridgette Massey, Joseph Evans and his wife LeAnne, Angela Evans, and Katlyn Evans; and great grandchildren, Wyatt Massey and Aubrey Evans.
Visitation will be Friday, September 20, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm and will continue Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 10 am to 12 pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be 12 pm, Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Steve Gilbert, Wade Gilbert, Andy Heltz, Lawrence Payne, Jeff Pollard, and Raymond Roussel.
