Joyce Whittington Hughes

Lifelong Leflore County resident Joyce Whittington Hughes died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at her home in Greenwood. She was 92.

Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Friday at Wilson & Knight Funeral home. Services will be 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Mrs. Hughes was the widow of John E. Hughes Jr., a Delta farmer and cattleman and her husband of 62 years.

Mrs. Hughes attended college at the University of Alabama and graduated from Mississippi State College for Women, now Mississippi University for Women. She was a member of the Lockhart Social Club and Chi Omega sorority and, in 1943, was elected Homecoming Queen at Mississippi State University.

A lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Greenwood, Mrs. Hughes was a longtime Sunday School teacher and Mission Study teacher. She was founder and first president of the Four Seasons Garden Club and a member of the Greenwood Garden Club. She established the first Special Education class in the Greenwood public schools.

Over the years, Mrs. Hughes served on many civic and church committees. She was a member of the Early Settlers Club and the Greenwood Cotillion Club.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, Charles S. and Mattie Blair Whittington; her brother, Charles Blair Whittington; and her daughter, Linda Blair Hughes.

She is survived by her sons, Toby Hughes of Jackson and Charlie Hughes of Vaiden; grandsons Jay Hughes of Pascagoula, Whit Hughes of Madison and Cam Hughes of Destin, Fla.; granddaughter Mary Katherine Cook of Brandon; and seven great-grandchildren and a step-great-great grandson.
