Lt. Colonel Junius G. ``Mac'' McDonald
Lt. Colonel Junius Gordon McDonald, USAF Rtd., 89, of Shalimar, Florida died September 25th, 2005 in a local hospital.
He was born 23 February 1916 in Winnfield and graduated from Winnfield High School. He attended Louisiana State University until he was drafted into the military service 14 March 1941. He was a veteran of 22 years service with the US Army and US Air Force.During World War II he served with the 322nd Bomb Group, 9th Air Force in 1944 and 1945 in the European Theater of Operation (France, Belgium,and Germany). He remained in Germany with the Army of Occupation until his assignment in May 1947 to Eglin AFB, Florida as a Design and Development Officer with the Air Proving Ground Command. He later served as: Armament Staff Officer at Ladd AFB, Alaska; the Tactical Air Command, Langley AFB, VA; and with the 38th Missile Wing, Sembach, Germany, retiring 31 March 1963. He received numerous awards and citations during his military career.
After retiring from the Air Force he served 14 years in Civil Service with the Air Proving Ground Command, Eglin AFB, Florida as a Test Project Engineer, retiring in 1978.
Lt. Colonel McDonald was a member of the Shalimar United Methodist Church, Eglin AFB Officers Club, Northwest Florida Retired Officers Club, and was a life member of The Retired Officers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents A. L. McDonald and Eva Smith McDonald of Jena, brother Lawson McDonald of Jena and sister Cassa Lou Harris of Mobile, Alabama.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Yeager McDonald of Shalimar, Florida, nephews Tony McDonald of Jena, John McDonald, Haughton and Nat Harris, Nashville, Tennessee, and niece Cathy Johnston of Jena.
Visitation will be Monday 26 September from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Mortuary at 17 Chestnut Ave., Ft.Walton Beach, Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday 27 September in the Shalimar United Methodist Church.Private interment will be in Barrancus National Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice, or the Shalimar United Methodist Building Fund.
McLaughlin Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
