Mrs. Laura Nell West
Laura Nell West was born June 30, 1913, to Minnie Lee McCarty and Jerry Horn McCarty in Beaver Dam, Mississippi. When she was a toddler, her family moved to Harmony, Mississippi, where Laura Nell grew up. She married Cliff Merrell West in 1935, and they had two sons, Cliff and Jerry. They made their home in Enterprise, Mississippi.
For many years, Laura Nell ran the West Café in Stonewall. She is still fondly remembered as the lady who made the best hamburgers they ever ate. After retiring, Laura Nell participated in the Foster Grandparents Program until well into her nineties. In the Enterprise and Clarkdale schools, she mentored and was beloved by many children who called her “Grandma.” She was a lifelong member of the Enterprise Baptist Church.
Laura Nell passed out of this life on September 20, 2012, at the age of ninety-nine. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff West, Sr., by her son, Jerry Wilson West, and by her granddaughter, Joy West. She is survived by her son, Cliff Merrell West, Jr., and wife Linda of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Lee West Adams and husband Robert of Houston, Texas, Cliff Merrell West, III, of Willis, Texas, and Mary West Horlock of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Taren Lee Adams, Hunter West Adams, and Katherine Elizabeth Horlock, all of Houston, Texas.
Laura Nell is further survived by her niece, Jane McCarty, of Enterprise, Mississippi, nephews J.C. McCarty and Will McCarty, both of Starkville, Mississippi, and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sela Ward's Hope Village for Children in Meridian, Mississippi.
Services will be Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Wright's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Taylor Wallace officiating. Burial will be in McGowan's Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, September 21, 2012 after 6:00 p.m. at Wright's Funeral Home.
